March Madness Bracket Pools

Your group’s brackets. Your way to score them.

Have everyone fill out a bracket before the tournament, predicting which teams advance all the way to the champion. Correct picks earn points, usually with more at stake in later rounds. The highest total wins.

Predict the full tournament before play begins. Score correct advancements with points by round, optional upset bonuses, and a championship tiebreaker.

One bracket before tipoff. Follow it through the final.

Set up your bracket pool

Decide what a correct pick is worth.

Choose how much later rounds count and whether upsets earn a bonus. A separate Sweet 16 pool can give your group a second chance.

Choose how much later rounds matter.

A familiar schedule gives 1, 2, 4, 8, 16, and 32 points per correct pick. Flatter weights put less of the result on the last few games and give early-round accuracy more influence.

Reward upset picks.

Add a bonus for correctly picking an underdog. A seed-difference bonus rewards a No. 12 beating a No. 5 more than a No. 9 beating a No. 8. You can also score by the winner’s seed.

Start again at the Sweet 16.

Open a separate pool after the first weekend. Members fill out a fresh bracket for the final 15 games, giving late arrivals and people with busted brackets another competition to follow.

Your pool’s rules

Keep the bracket rules your group knows.

Choose the scoring, entry limits, and tiebreakers for your pool.

Tournament and entries

Tournament
Run a pool for the men’s or women’s NCAA tournament.
Starting stage
Start with the 64-team main bracket, include opening-round games, or start later with the teams still playing. Identify the included games on the rules sheet.
Entries per person
Allow one entry each or set a limit for your group.
Entry deadline
Set the cutoff and time zone around the first included game. Close changes when entries lock.

Bracket scoring

Round values
Award equal points per correct pick or set a different value for each round.
Seed scoring
Add the advancing team’s seed to round points, or multiply round points by that seed. State which formula applies.
Upset bonuses
Award an extra bonus when a higher-numbered seed beats a lower-numbered seed, using a fixed amount or their seed difference.
Bonus picks
Give a designated bonus team extra value, with the amount and eligible rounds set before entries lock.
Perfect-region bonuses
Add points for a fully correct region or another clearly defined set of predictions.
Later correct picks
Keep awarding points for a correctly predicted advancing team even if an earlier pick elsewhere in that bracket was wrong.

Finishing and exceptions

Championship tiebreaker
Use the predicted combined score of the championship game. Set when the prediction locks, whether going over matters, and the next rule if entries are equally close.
Additional tiebreakers
Use a stated round-by-round comparison or another house rule after total points. Set the full order before the pool starts.
Incomplete brackets
Require every pick before submission, or define how blank selections are scored.
Canceled games
Set how cancellations, forfeits, and official result corrections affect points and advancement.
Second-chance entries
Give a later-start pool its own entry deadline, scoring, and standings.

A setup question, a scoring issue, a house rule you want to try: you’ll hear from the people building Picksheet.

Before the brackets lock.

A few decisions to settle before inviting your group.

Do members pick every game upfront?

Yes. A bracket predicts each team’s path to the final before the first included game. Members do not submit new picks when the real matchups become known.

Do opening-round games count?

They can. A pool starting with the 64-team main bracket covers 63 games across six rounds. Including the opening round adds games and an earlier deadline. Use the current tournament field when setting that up.

What happens when someone’s champion loses?

That team cannot earn points in future rounds, but points already earned remain. Other correct picks can still score, and the entry stays in the standings.

What if we want members to choose teams instead of fill out a bracket?

A Pick X pool lets each entry choose a set of teams and earn seed points for their wins, without predicting the full path. See Pick X and seed pools.
