March Madness Pick X Pools

Give your group a handful of teams to follow.

In a Pick X pool, members choose a set of teams before the tournament and earn their seed numbers in points for each win. Pick 8 uses eight teams. The highest total wins.

Choose a set of teams, often eight, and earn their seed numbers in points for each win. Use any eligible teams or require one from each seed line.

Pick the teams once. Count their wins throughout the tournament.

Choose how teams are selected

Pick 8, a team from each seed line, or your own count.

The team-selection rule changes the pool even when the scoring stays the same.

Choose any eight teams.

Members choose freely from the eligible field. A No. 10 seed winning twice earns 20 points, so one underdog run can matter as much as several wins by favorites.

Pick one from each seed line.

Require one No. 1 seed, one No. 2, and so on through No. 16. Every entry follows 16 teams, with members choosing among teams with the same seed.

Set a custom team count.

Use a smaller or larger set, or require picks from each region. Keep simple seed-per-win scoring or make later-round wins worth more.

Tournament and entries

Tournament
Run a pool for the men’s or women’s NCAA tournament.
Starting stage
Start with the 64-team main bracket, include opening-round games, or start later with the teams still playing. Identify the included games on the rules sheet.
Entries per person
Allow one entry each or set a limit for your group.
Entry deadline
Set the cutoff and time zone around the first included game. Close changes when entries lock.

Team selections

Teams per entry
Use Pick 8 or choose a different required number of teams.
Seed restrictions
Allow any eligible teams, one per seed line, or a stated mix of seed ranges.
Regional restrictions
Allow picks from any region or require a specified number from each.
Shared selections
Allow the same team on different entries. Each entry may select a particular team only once.
Selection lock
Keep the selected set fixed after the entry deadline. An eliminated team is not replaced in a standard Pick X pool.

Scoring and finishing

Seed points per win
Add the team’s seed number for each eligible win. A No. 10 seed winning twice adds 20 points.
Round modifiers
Keep each win worth the same seed value, or multiply it by a specified round value.
Eliminated teams
Keep points already earned. A team that loses stops adding points.
Starting-stage scoring
For a later-start pool, count only wins from the pool’s stated starting stage.
Championship tiebreaker
Use the predicted combined score of the championship game. Set when the prediction locks, whether going over matters, and the next rule if entries are equally close.
Other ties
Use total wins by selected teams, another announced tiebreaker, or a shared place after all tiebreakers are exhausted.

Visibility and commissioner controls

A setup question, a scoring issue, a house rule you want to try: you’ll hear from the people building Picksheet.

Before your group picks its teams.

How Pick X differs from other March Madness pools.

What does Pick X mean?

The X is the number of teams each entry chooses. Pick 8 uses eight; a different count changes the roster size. The name alone does not specify scoring, so include the seed-per-win rule or your chosen alternative.

Are Pick 8 and a seed pool the same thing?

They overlap when Pick 8 uses seed points for wins. Seed pool also describes setups with other selection rules, such as choosing one team from each seed line. Say both how teams are chosen and how they score.

Do members predict the matchups?

No. Members choose teams and follow their actual wins. They do not need to predict every opponent or round of advancement.

What if members want to assign the point values themselves?

That is team confidence. Members give their selected teams unique point values, then earn those values when the teams win. See Team Confidence.
