College Football Playoff Team Ranking Pools

Rank the teams once. Follow every win.

Have each member assign the 12 playoff teams a different value from 1 to 12. Every time a team wins, the entry earns that team’s value again. The highest total wins. Also called Rank’em or team confidence, this format needs just one submission before the playoff starts.

Assign values from 1 to 12 once. Every team win earns its assigned value again. Also called Rank’em or team confidence, with optional round multipliers.

$1 per entry. Nothing upfront.

Set up your team-ranking pool

Keep each win equal, or weight the later rounds.

A first-round team can win four games; a team with a bye can win three. Byes earn no win points. The scoring you choose determines how much that extra opportunity matters.

Use the assigned value for every win.

A team assigned 12 points earns 12 each time it wins. Three wins add 36 points; four add 48. Keep those values fixed from the first round through the championship.

Add round multipliers.

If your group wants later wins to count more, multiply team values by a factor for each round. For example, a 2× championship multiplier makes a team assigned 12 worth 24 points for that win.

Rankings and entries

All 12 teams
Rank the entire playoff field, including the four teams with first-round byes.
Point values
Assign each number from 1 through 12 exactly once. Twelve is the highest point value; these numbers are independent of the teams’ seeds.
Fixed rankings
Keep each team’s original value throughout the pool. An eliminated team’s points cannot be reassigned.
Entries per person
Allow one ranking each or set a multiple-entry limit. Every entry has its own complete set of values.
Later starts
Start a separate quarterfinal pool with the eight remaining teams ranked 1 through 8. Count only wins from that round onward.

Scoring and byes

Points per win
Add the winning team’s assigned value to each entry. That value can score again in every round the team wins.
Round multipliers
Use a multiplier of 1 in every round, or apply custom multipliers to increase the value of later wins.
Bye treatment
Award no win points for a bye. The four teams that skip the first round begin scoring with an actual quarterfinal win.
Eliminated teams
A loss ends that team’s scoring. Points it already earned remain in the entry’s total.
Final standings
Add points from every ranked team across the included rounds. The highest total after the championship wins.

Deadlines and tiebreakers

One ranking deadline
Collect all values before the first included game. The same cutoff applies to teams with first-round byes.
Changes before lock
Allow edits until the deadline, while keeping each value unique. Rankings stay fixed after lock.
Complete entries
Require all teams to have a value and collect the tiebreaker with the ranking.
Championship total
Compare tied entries’ predicted combined championship scores with the actual total, including overtime.
Round-score tiebreakers
Optionally compare points earned in selected rounds before or after the championship-total prediction. Choose the order and the outcome if entries remain tied.

Visibility and commissioner controls

Seeing other picks
Reveal selections after the applicable deadline.

Commissioner picks are flagged “C”.
Entry management
Keep track of who has joined, how many entries they have, and who still owes their dues.

Before rankings lock.

What the values mean and how they keep scoring.

Is this the same as Rank’em or team confidence?

Those names often describe this format: assign values to playoff teams once and earn each team’s value for every win. Check the rules for differences such as round multipliers or bye points.

Does 1 mean the best team?

Not on this point scale. A value of 12 earns the most per win and 1 earns the least. Playoff seeds determine the real bracket; members’ assigned values determine their pool points.

Do teams with byes get first-round points?

No. A bye is not a game win. A champion that starts in the first round wins four games; a champion with a bye wins three. Round multipliers can change how much each of those wins is worth.

How is this different from confidence pick’em?

Here, points stay with a team and can score repeatedly. In confidence pick’em, members attach a value to an individual game pick. That value scores only if that pick wins. See CFP Pick’em scoring options.

Do members choose a bracket too?

No. They rank teams without predicting every matchup. A full bracket pool is a separate format that follows a predicted path to the champion. Explore CFP Bracket.

What does hosting cost?

$1 for each entry you keep in the new pool, with nothing upfront and no minimum. The new pool is billed separately.
